Expedition Design, Goals, and Itinerary

Mission Summary – The Montuso Foundation’s “Los Ninos de Las Americas” expedition travels South along the Transamerican Highway, delivering school supplies to poor and under privileged children in Central and South America. Leveraging internet technologies and the power of networks, Montuso staff provide live web internet webcasts which connect the children who’ve donated supplies with those receiving them. Through this shared experience, elementary school students can form connections and continue to communicate with each other into the future.

Starting in San Francisco 2008 and ending approximately sixty days from the start, the 2008 Montuso Expedition will travel twenty-one thousand miles through twelve countries; Mexico, Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Panama, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, and Argentina—before ending in Buenos Aires. The expedition team will be traveling in a Volkswagen Van, which will itself be donated to a disabled children’s school in Buenos Aires at the end of the trip.

A large quantity of school supplies have already been generously provided to Montuso by elementary schools, high schools, and colleges from around the San Francisco Bay Area. As we have far too many supplies to fit in our van, most of what we give away will be shipped to designated locations along the route of travel in all twelve countries. Upon arriving in each area along our itinerary, expedition team members will pick up and deliver goods to the most underprivileged schools in their localities. Upon arrival at selected schools, the expedition team will contact the particular U.S. school from which the supplies were donated. After a quick setup, the two schools in both locations will chat via live web video as the supplies are being opened by the children in Latin America. These live interactions will later be edited, archived, and made available for viewing on the internet by the Montuso Foundation.

In this way, the 2008 Montuso Humanitarian Expedition: Los Niños de Las Americas
combines directly effective aid to Latin American children and schools with new kind of connection and shared experience that promises to enrich the lives of everyone involved.
